To understand the journey of Gismo, we sat down with Ani Dimitrova, a talented designer with a strong background in typography design. Ani, who began her career at Fontfabric, now works on her own type projects, undertakes commissioned ones, and teaches Typography design to students at Varna Free University.
Interview with Ani Dimitrova
Can you introduce yourself?
“I have been working professionally in typeface design for 9 years now. I can say that I love doing that and so far I have never considered it a job, but just a pleasure…”
What inspired you to create Gismo, and how did you come up with the idea for its unique subfamilies?
“The idea for Gismo came at a very suitable moment when I just needed to make a more eccentric font. Gismo was inspired by a lot of different shapes that I have seen over the years that have appealed to me.“
What were some of the biggest challenges you faced during the font creation process?
“I count the biggest challenge as the technical process itself, in which I had to make the transition from round to square letterforms…”
How do you envision Gismo being used by designers in the creative industry?
“I think it is quite suitable for accents, posters, catchy titles, and why not for short texts? Actually, I can’t wait to see it in use! Тhe ultimate goal of any font project is not only to solve a problem, but to make users happy. Creating new typefaces that stand out is a perpetual challenge for type designers.“
If Gismo were a person, what qualities would they possess?
“Cheerful and playful, with lots of humor, and perhaps a creative person who can step into different roles.”
