Petrov Sans, a typeface where the meticulously calculated laws of astronomy meet the nuanced world of optical precision. Beginning as a vision by Asen Petrov refined to perfection by Stefan Yatanski, and mentored by the experienced hands of Svet Simov.
Ever had that moment when something simple just clicks? That’s how we felt creating Petrov Sans. It’s our little piece of art born from everyday inspiration. We’d love to share its story with you. Here’s our journey, filled with stars and curves, that shaped this unique typeface.
At Fontfabric Type Foundry, every typeface we create has its own origin story, filled with passion, challenges, and moments of eureka. With our recent releases Muller Next, Gismo, Grima, Auge, Salina, Calleo, and now Petrov Sans, we continually push the boundaries of what’s possible in the realm of typography. Today, we illuminate the story behind Petrov Sans.
Petrov Sans: A Celestial Inspiration
Petrov Sans is all about geometric finesse. Straight lines intersecting ovals, rounded corners signaling the end of deliberate segments, and each letter crafted with a level of dedication that mirrors the precision of celestial mechanics. But that’s just half the story. Its roots are equally grounded in the intricacies of optical compensations, ensuring readability and aesthetic delight.
Consisting of 18 distinct fonts, Petrov Sans offers versatility that’s unmatched. Its strong geometric presence acts as a beacon, guiding designers toward innovative and impactful visual narratives. Think of it as your typographic telescope, allowing you to explore and express ideas in ways you’ve never imagined before.
A Closer Look
For the ones passionate about design intricacies, Petrov Sans doesn’t disappoint. Packed with nifty OpenType features, it’s equipped to elevate your designs to new dimensions. And even if you’re not all about the technical nuances, these are the little things that give your design the spark it needs.
Each details, from the subtle tails in the lowercase ‘a’ to the absent spurs in the letters “r” and “n”, are a nod to its calculated origin. Details that take place on both aesthetics and functionality.
Globally inclined, Petrov Sans doesn’t just communicate; it resonates. With expansive multi-language support, including Latin-based and Cyrillic languages, it ensures your voice is heard, far and wide.

The Visionaries behind Petrov Sans
Started by Asen Petrov, this font took shape through many versions until it became what it is today. Stefan Yatanski, in his first project with Fontfabric, poured 8-9 months of hard work into Petrov Sans. With helpful tips from Svet Simov, they turned a simple idea into a font that speaks to many.
Interview with the Authors
What inspired you to create Petrov, and how did you come up with the idea?
Asen: “The original idea behind the font was to create a technical sans serif, simplified with a contemporary look and feel. Close to the fonts used in technical drawings, blueprints, technical documentation, and signage. I also wanted it to be a sort of tribute to my father, who basically supported and encouraged my creativity since I was a kid. That’s why the font is named after him.”
What were some of the biggest challenges you faced during the font creation process?
Asen: “In the process of creating the font, the hardest part was to decide how to do the terminals of some of the characters and some purely visual cuts in the Cyrillic characters.”
Stefan: “The challenge was to remove the excess material from the letterforms without wiping off the font’s identity.”
How do you envision Petrov being used by designers in the creative industry? What would be the best implication for Petrov in terms of usability?
Asen: “I have no specific idea how an artist would use Petrov Sans, I leave that entirely up to their creativity and vision. Personally, I think the best a typeface can achieve is to be used in different areas of design by many creative individuals, which would legitimize its usefulness.”
Stefan: “It’s a versatile font so it would fit a lot of scenarios, but mostly modern, tech and minimalistic.”
Did other fonts inspire you in the design process of Petrov Sans?
Asen: “Of course, there was a touch of inspiration for me, too. That was Linotype’s DIN 1451 and the updated DIN Mittelschrift in partnership with Adobe.”
Stefan: “Honestly, yes – the font is called Fester and is engineered by Ventsislav Dzhokov, a colleague of mine. It has a similar vibe, but with a different twist to it.“
If Petrov were a person, what qualities would they possess?
Asen: “At its core would be precise minimalist and truly honest with an eye to the future and respectful of the past.”
Stefan: “I’d say Well-rounded, Grounded, a Problem Solver”
