The Visionaries behind Petrov Sans
Started by Asen Petrov, this font took shape through many versions until it became what it is today. Stefan Yatanski, in his first project with Fontfabric, poured 8-9 months of hard work into Petrov Sans. With helpful tips from Svet Simov, they turned a simple idea into a font that speaks to many.
Interview with the Authors
What inspired you to create Petrov, and how did you come up with the idea?
Asen: “The original idea behind the font was to create a technical sans serif, simplified with a contemporary look and feel. Close to the fonts used in technical drawings, blueprints, technical documentation, and signage. I also wanted it to be a sort of tribute to my father, who basically supported and encouraged my creativity since I was a kid. That’s why the font is named after him.”
What were some of the biggest challenges you faced during the font creation process?
Asen: “In the process of creating the font, the hardest part was to decide how to do the terminals of some of the characters and some purely visual cuts in the Cyrillic characters.”
Stefan: “The challenge was to remove the excess material from the letterforms without wiping off the font’s identity.”
How do you envision Petrov being used by designers in the creative industry? What would be the best implication for Petrov in terms of usability?
Asen: “I have no specific idea how an artist would use Petrov Sans, I leave that entirely up to their creativity and vision. Personally, I think the best a typeface can achieve is to be used in different areas of design by many creative individuals, which would legitimize its usefulness.”
Stefan: “It’s a versatile font so it would fit a lot of scenarios, but mostly modern, tech and minimalistic.”
Did other fonts inspire you in the design process of Petrov Sans?
Asen: “Of course, there was a touch of inspiration for me, too. That was Linotype’s DIN 1451 and the updated DIN Mittelschrift in partnership with Adobe.”
Stefan: “Honestly, yes – the font is called Fester and is engineered by Ventsislav Dzhokov, a colleague of mine. It has a similar vibe, but with a different twist to it.“
If Petrov were a person, what qualities would they possess?
Asen: “At its core would be precise minimalist and truly honest with an eye to the future and respectful of the past.”
Stefan: “I’d say Well-rounded, Grounded, a Problem Solver”
